Update at 2:00 p.m. 2/18:
The DePauw men’s swimming and diving team finished third with a final point total of 1,155.0 behind first place Denison University (1908.0) and second place Kenyon College (1797.5).
In the first final of the night sophomore Charlie Stewart-Bates placed tenth in the mile with a final time of 16:34.26. Close behind him was senior David Freund who swam it in 16:53.71.
First-year Alex Murlin came back for the finals in the 100 yard individual medley and finished sixth overall with a time of 52.91. Just a second after him was senior Andrew Byerly who finished ninth.
Junior Adam Pircon added 29 points to the Tiger’s total with a fourth place finish in the 200 yard backstroke (1:52.25).
Four Tigers finished the 100 yard freestyle within 0.4 seconds of each other. Sophomore aidan Schurig placed ninth with a time of 46.41. Sophomore Will Serf (46.67) and seniors Kurt Swieter (46.77) and Sam Wagner (46.81) finished 11, 12, and 13 respectively.
Senior Sam McManus was unsuccessful in sweeping the breaststroke events with a second place finish in the 200 yard breaststroke. Senior Mitchell Davis finished seventh with a time of 2:06.18.
The Tigers had a strong showing in the 200 yard butterfly with all four qualified swimmers scoring points. Junior Josh McCown touched first with a time of 1:54.36 and was followed by first-year Ian Longan with a time of 1:56.06. Sophomore Max Steffy came in just under two minutes and junior Zach Johns rounded out the Tigers with a time of 2:02.38.
In the final event of the championships, the 400 yard freestyle relay, the DePauw A relay finished third with an overall time of 3:04.23.
Update at 6:30 p.m. 2/17:
First-year Alex Murlin set a new DePauw record for the 100 yard individual medley during the last of the preliminary swimming events.
In the first preliminary event of the day, Murlin and senior Andrew Byerly qualified themselves for the finals in the 100 yard individual medley. Murlin touched fifth (52.66) and Byerly touched eighth (54.07) and both were followed closely behind by sophomore Ryan Smith who touched 14. Murlin’s time set a new team record for DePauw.
Junior Adam Pircon continued the men’s strong showing in the 200 yard backstroke finishing with a time 1:52.02.
Sophomore Aidan Schurig qualified a lane for the finals in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.39. Also qualifying for the finals are seniors Sam Wagner and Kurt Swieter and sophomore Will Serf.
Seniors Sam McManus and Mitchell Davis finished fifth and eighth in the 200 yard breaststroke respectively. They qualified for the finals along with senior Bradley Leftwich.
The Tigers qualified four swimmers in the 200 yard butterfly. Qualifiers include juniors Josh McCown and Zach Johns, first-year Andrew Longan, sophomore Max Steffy.
In the 400 yard freestyle relay, DePauw qualified their A relay with a time of 3:11.61.
Update at 10:00 a.m. 2/17:
After the NCAC’s swimming championships last night Senior Sam McManus is the only Tiger to have an individual win for the team. The Tigers remain at third being Denison and Kenyon.
The Tigers A relay team for the 200 yard medley relay started the night off by contributing 58 points to the team’s total score. First-years Alex Murlin and Ian Longan, senior Mitchell Davis and sophomore Aidan Schurig touched the wall fourth with a final time of 1:32.91.
Murlin then came back to swim his first individual event of the night and placed 10 in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:10.90. Junior Josh McCown followed close behind with a time of 4:14.57.
In his third swim of the night Murlin came back to swim a time of 52.03 in the 100 yard butterfly.
Senior Kurt Swieter, junior Adam Pircon and Sophomore Will Serf all had strong swims in the 200 yard freestyle relays. Swieter and Pircon finished 12 and 15 while Serf finished 19.
Senior Sam McManus has DePauw’s lone individual event win after he swam the 100 yard breaststroke. He finished with a time of 54.95. Davis finished ninth with a time of 58.38. McManus and Davis combined to contribute 59 points to the Tigers team score.
The last individual event of the night for swimming was the 100 yard backstroke. Swimming in his fourth event of the night Longan placed 14 with a final time of 53.64.
Senior Eric Addy finished third in the 1-meter diving with a final score of 403.50.
The final day of swimming is underway with the preliminary races. Murlin and senior Andrew Byerly are seeded fifth and sixth respectively in the 100 yard individual medley. Pircon is seeded 14 out of 34 swimmers in the 200 yard backstroke.
After finishing in the top spot in the 100 yard breaststroke, McManus will have a chance to also take the top finish in the 200 yard breaststroke. McCown is seeded 15 of 34 swimmers for the 200 yard butterfly event. Sophomore Charlie-Stewart Bates and senior David Freund are DePauw’s two swimmers competing in the mile (1650).
Update at 3:30 p.m. 2/16:
The Tigers qualified 14 individual swimmers and their lone diver for tonight’s finals. Along with the individual swimmers, Depauw also qualified their A relay.
To start the morning the men’s A relay qualified for the finals in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:35.63. Sophomore Ryan Smith started the relay and was followed by seniors Mitchell Davis and Sam Wagner. Sophomore Will Serf anchored the team.
Junior Josh McCown and first-year Alex Murlin qualified for the 400 yard individual medley touching 10 and 11 respectively. Senior Bradley Leftwich followed behind with a 16 place finish which also qualified him a lane in final.
First-year Ian Longan touched the wall 12 with a time of 51.64 in the 100 yard butterfly. Following closely behind to qualify for the finals is junior Zach Johns, sophomore Max Steffy and Wagner.
Senior Kurt Swieter qualified himself for the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.39. Finishing just two spots behind is junior Adam Pircon with a time 1:43.16. Serf and sophomore Charlie Stewart-Bates also clinched a lane for the finals.
DePauw had a strong showing in the 100 yard breaststroke event. Senior Sam McManus was barely out-touched by Denison’s Kenny Fox to secure a second place finish (55.98). Davis also found himself with a strong finish with a time of 57.79. Leftwich snuck his way into the finals with a 23 place finish.
Continuing his strong showing for the morning, Longan touched the wall 13 in the 100 yard backstyle to secure a lane in the finals. Other finishers include Smith with a 20 place finish.
Senior diver Eric Addy finished second second in the 1-meter diving competition to secure himself a spot for tonight’s finals.
The meet will start back up at 6:30 p.m. with the final of the 200 yard medley relay.
Update 11:30 pm. 2/15:
The Tigers remain at third on the leaderboards with 412.5 points behind both powerhouses Denison University (651.5) and Kenyon College (622.5) after the second day of competition.
The Tigers 200 yard freestyle relay started the night off strong with a third place finish at 1:22.29.
Continuing the trend junior Adam Pircon and senior Kurt Swieter finished 10 and 12 in the 500 yard freestyle.
Senior Mitchell Davis placed sixth in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 1:54.15 adding 27 points to the Tiger’s team total. Sophomore Aidan Schurig also touched the wall sixth in the 50 yard freestyle.
In the last final of the night, the Tigers 400 yard medley relay finished third with a final time of 3:22.44.
The third day of competition will kick off with the 200 medley relay. Tigers to watch for include first-year Alex Murlin and junior Josh McCown in the 400 yard individual medley. First-year Ian Longan is seeded 18 and sophomore Max Steffy is seeded 20 of 48 swimmers in the 100 yard butterfly.
Swieter will compete in the 200 yard freestyle and is seeded at 14 of 62 swimmers. Senior Sam McManus takes the top seed in the 100 yard breaststroke followed closely behind with Davis who is seeded sixth. Longan is also scheduled to compete in the 100 yard backstroke. Senior Eric Addy will also compete in the 1-meter diving competition.
Preliminary events start at 10 a.m. at Denison University.
Update at 2:15 p.m 2/15:
The Tiger’s A relay in the 200 yard freestyle made up of seniors Sam Wagner, Andrew Byerly and Bradley Leftwich and sophomore Aidan Schurig, finished seventh in the preliminary event. Their finish qualified them for the finals that will take place later this evening.
Senior Kurt Swieter and junior Adam Pircon placed tenth and thirteenth respectively in the 500 yard freestyle. Other qualifiers for finals include sophomores Charlie Stewart-Bates and Max Steffy and senior David Freund.
In the 200 yard individual medley race, Senior Mitchell Davis placed sixth with a time of 1:53.87. First-year Alex Murlin and juniors Josh McCown and Zach Johns also qualified for the finals.
The Tigers qualified four men in the 50 yard freestyle. Schurig finished eighth with a time of 21.06. Other finals qualifiers include senior Sam McManus (21.17) and Wagner (21.23) and sophomore Will Serf (21.71).
DePauw’s A relay in the 400 yard medley touched the wall at a time of 3:36.08. Byerly, Johns, Serf and sophomore Ryan Smith rounded out the relay and will swim in tonight’s finals.
On the first night of competition (Feb. 14), the men’s swimming and diving team sits third place of ten teams at the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) swimming and diving championships.
Senior Diver Eric Addy started the night off with a third place finish in the 3-meter diving. With a score of 364.00, he contributed 30 points to the Tiger’s team score.
The men continued their strong performance in the 800 yard freestyle relay. Another third place finish added another 60 points to the leaderboard. DePauw’s relay made up of seniors Sam McManus and Kurt Swieter, sophomore Will Serf and junior Adam Pircon finished with a time 6:42.92.
As the Tigers move into day two of the meet they will look to stay near the top of the leaderboard. Day two’s events include the 200 yard freestyle relay, 500 yard freestyle relay, 200 yard individual medley, 50 yard freestyle and the 400 medley relay.
Swimmers to look for on day two include Swieter, Pircon and sophomore Charlie Stewart-Bates in the 500 yard freestyle. Junior Mitchell Davis and first-year Alex Murlin are seeded at 11 and 12 respectively in the 200 yard individual medley. Sophomore Aidan Schurig is seeded ninth of 75 swimmers in the 50 yard freestyle. Other tigers seeded high in the event include McManus, senior Sam Wagner and senior Andrew Byerly.
The preliminary races start at 10 a.m. and are followed by the finals at 6:30 p.m.
