Kudos and suggestions on rush changes

The series of changes made to this year's rush by the Panhellenic Council and Interfraternity Council are welcome improvements to the greek system. After many years in which the DePauw community voiced concerns about rush, we are finally seeing changes that make the process fairer for recruits and less time-consuming during the academic week. These improvements help rush reach the ideal it's always meant to be: helping potential new members join a chapter in which they can feel at home, and helping chapters find members that fit their identity. The most obvious improvement has been moving rush rounds exclusively to the weekend. Not only does this give chapters and participants a longer break between first and second rounds, but it completely removes the distraction of rush during the academic week ---- without sacrificing the quality of the experience.

We realize that any time a system as complex as DePauw's rush sees major changes, mistakes may take place. For this reason, we're willing to overlook the delay to Saturday's first round of men's rush, and we commend IFC for taking responsibility.

Finally, we suggest one more change to the rush process: Panhel and IFC should establish policies regarding rush participants who must miss any round. Deciding whether or not to invite a potential new member back to a house is currently done on a chapter-by-chapter basis, and on the sorority side, this results in an inconsistency that is unfair to the women. This issue doesn't seem to be a problem in men's rush, as chapters take a more relaxed approach to invitations, but we believe IFC also implementing a uniform policy can do nothing but help.
