As you might have seen on page 3 of this issue, the University has made great strides recently in improving the accessibility of facilities on campus to people with physical disabilities. Much money, time and effort has gone into making our campus easy to navigate for all students. Some of these changes may not be immediately obvious, like the bumps on sidewalk curbs, which mark the edge of the road for people with vision impairments. These improvements can do nothing but help to increase the diversity of DePauw's student body. That being said, we need to go further. All students should be able to take advantage of the resources that our University provides, and the efforts to improve accessibility should not stop until this becomes a reality. We recognize that financial limitations play a part in the number and magnitude of these changes, but the improvements should certainly be a priority.
As the University has undertaken these changes, we encourage greek houses to follow suit. As greek life is such an integral part of campus life, sororities and fraternities should be accessible to all students at DePauw. Even more than with the University, greek chapters' financial situations hinder progress on accessibility, but when the chapters are considering plans for future renovations, accessibility for the disabled should be a top priority.
Progress on accessibility commendable, but more can be done
