In an effort to promote fitness and health on campus, several new fitness classes have been added to the wellness program. These new classes, which include Turbo Kick, Pilates, kickboxing, yoga and tai chi, are open to all members of the DePauw community.
Senior Maria Romaine, a sports medicine major, organized the newly-added Turbo Kick class and is in charge of conducting the classes. Romaine, a former kickboxer herself, was unable to continue kickboxing after she injured her knee. She wanted to find an activity that would help her stay in shape and active.
"I found out about [Turbo Kick] in my hometown, and I just had so much fun being a part of it. I decided to go and get certified to teach the class," Romaine said. "A lot of DePauw students, whether they are athletes or not, could really enjoy this activity."
The class, which is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays at 5 p.m., has grown to be popular over the course of a few weeks. Romaine leads the classes in the dance studio in the Lilly Center. The dance studio does have it drawbacks for the class, though, especially with its increased popularity.
"It can get really hot sometimes with all the people huddled up in the dance studio, but I really like doing Turbo Kick in there because of the mirrors," Romaine said. "It's really got a nice effect."
The class is open to students or members of the DePauw community of all skill levels. Freshman Jessica Au said she has enjoyed participating in the new class.
"I really enjoy going to Turbo Kick. I get such a good work-out, and I'm not really all that wiped out by the time it's over," she said. "I just have this great feeling for doing it and having fun."
