HOT:

The Smoking Pig: With a name like this, it just has to be a hot, but the newest Greencastle restaurant located at 424 Bloomington Street wins more than just novelty points.  The restaurant offers both “pig in” dining and a “pig out” carryout menu.    I’ve also got to mention the fact that the building looks as though it used to house a laundromat, (it really used to be the home of another barbecue joint, Charlie Brown’s) which, to me, implies cleanliness. Be sure to try the cole slaw.

Marv’s: This restaurant inspires people. Who am I to mess with that?

Spinach artichoke dip and sushi: No, not together. Gross.  But these two foods represent the changes and staples of campus dinning. While The Fluttering Duck should bring back the panini sandwiches, the more sports bar atmosphere fits the restaurant clientele and décor more closely. And they still have the narcotic spinach dip and tricolored chips as an appetizer. You can also get the same thing at The Den. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Sodexho knows that taking this item off the menu might lead to student upheaval.  And while I’ve had fresher, more elaborate sushi, the Hub’s is surprisingly good and a commendable venture.

2 West: Many seniors still bemoan the loss of The Gate, especially for the exceptional breed of ‘05 Hogaters. But the new Walden Inn restaurant, 2 West, stands up pretty well. Of course, unless you are using fake money — also known as your student meal plan — 2 West can get a little pricey. But it is nice to have a sit-down campus dinning space with more upscale options like shrimp scampi or penne ala vodka. Even my grandma was impressed with it. Enough said.

Pizza King: If you are ever in charge of ordering pizza for a group, consider Pizza King before the standard Papa John’s or Dominos.  And while I’d stick with the pizza, my best friend swears by the stromboli. But keep in mind that the woman doesn’t eat condiments. There’s a reason she’s not the columnist.

The Monon Restaurant: Despite my insatiable worship of cheese omelets, I have never eaten here. I intend to do so before I graduate. If the proprietors of this eatery would like to speed this process up, gift certificates can be sent to UB Box 7095.

NOT:

Steak: I know that people swear by them, but neither Almost Home nor Toppers have quite perfected the art of beef (or, for that matter, seem to know what the term “medium-well” implies). Sure, I can eat the Vegetable Panini, or the Veggie Patch Pasta, but I need some protein, man. Don’t make me go to the Avon Outback to get it.

Mexican food: To be fair, I haven’t eaten at Casa Grande yet. But until Los Martinez gets their liquor license, I am sticking with the Taco Bell Fresco Menu, where the Grilled Steak Soft Taco only has 160 calories. And they’re open late. Oh Fourth Meal, you disgust me with your temptations.

Ice cream: I would eat this all year round, so when Dairy Castle and Dari-Licious “close for the season,” I get sad. And I am morally opposed to the term “Kwik” in relation to anything dairy.

The Rockhouse Bar and Grille:  This is purely in retaliation of the closure of the bar portion of the establishment and the false promises of its imminent return to regular hours, which only serve to toy with my emotions. It’s my last semester at DePauw, and I need the drinks, so I will boycott the food until Rockhouse resumes its normal hours of operation
