Focus the Nation continues important discussion

While the goal may seem simple, it is a complex task for one individual to move toward sustainability, much less an entire nation. We at The DePauw commend the teach-in's attempts to encourage discussion. As the largest teach-in in American history, Focus the Nation granted DePauw the opportunity to be a part of simultaneous discussions that may evolve into worthwhile action across the nation.
We appreciate that the event focused on straightforward, attainable solutions instead of guilt-trips, which tend to frustrate rather than inspire students. We feel that the University has begun to address and has taken seriously students' concerns about the environment. This is definitely a step in the right direction.
Not only did the teach-in further the actions DePauw has already taken to ensure our future, but it incorporated the larger Greencastle community in the discussions. Here at The DePauw, we value any attempts that are made to reach out to our community and help to strengthen town-gown relations between the University and Greencastle. We have come a long way in this realm, but we can always do more.
Even though technology prevented DePauw from participating in the planned interactive Web cast, the spirit of cooperation was enough to remind us that while individual effort toward sustainability is admirable, it is collaborative effort toward sustainability will create effective change.
