Even with the stress of finals, students are showing they know it is far better to give than to receive.
Students and organizations around campus are creating new ideas to help those in need throughout Greencastle.
Senior Matt Bollero started a toy drive at DePauw for less fortunate children in Putnam County. Bollero said his family usually helps with a toy drive in Florida but would be unable to sponsor a family this year. To make sure someone was helped, he decided to focus on Greencastle.
"Considering the divide sometimes associated between DePauw and the Greencastle community, I think this is a good way to show that students do care and support the community in which we live," he said. "I felt like this would be a good way to help close the gap."
Bollero talked to his parents and several alumni during parent's weekend and collected about $700 to start funding the drive. Then he decided to open up the cause to the rest of DePauw. He said he thought students would be more likely to donate toys than money. He wants to donate most of the toys to the women's and children's shelter in Greencastle.
Because of his background in wellness-related groups on campus, Bollero chose a physical fitness theme. He said students and faculty are invited to place sports-oriented items such as basketballs, jump ropes and soccer balls in the various toy drive boxes placed around campus. The toys are being collected until Friday, and Bollero plans to distribute the toys over the weekend and next week.
Alpha Phi sorority is also getting into the giving spirit by helping a local family that endured a tragic fire in its home over Thanksgiving break. Although the community has offered support by collecting canned food items, clothing and personal hygiene products, the family is still in need of refrigerated food, toys, cleaning supplies and other items that may typically be overlooked. Alpha Phi and the DePauw community are raising funds and collecting these kinds of items.
