The men and women's swimming and diving teams will host Wheaton College and Transylvania University at 5:15 p.m. tonight at the Lilly Center for the first of four home meets this season.

The DePauw women are 2-1 heading into tonight's meet after defeating Wittenberg University 171.5-124.5 on Nov. 3. Last season the women's team finished second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) to Trinity (Tx.) University. Against Wheaton last year, the women's team lost by one point, 112-111.

"We have a smaller team this year, and it creates a more intimate dynamic," said senior Maddison Hamil. "We are training harder this year than any of the other years I've been on the team."

Leading the Tigers this season are seniors Katie Doogan and Hamil, both of whom qualified for nationals in 2005. In addition to holding school records in the 200-yard and 400-yard individual medleys, Doogan has earned SCAC swimmer of the year honors twice in the past three years.

"We have some really strong freshmen, and our returning swimmers are also really strong," Hamil said. "I think we have a really great shot at taking the championship."

All-American senior Katherine Burt leads Wheaton in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Jillian Morris will also provide tough competition for the Tigers in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke.

The DePauw men's team is also 2-1 following a 206-93 win at Wittenberg. Capturing its third straight SCAC championship last season, this year's team retains several leading scorers.

"I think that we're looking really good as far as winning another conference championship goes," said senior diver Mike Metroka. "We didn't lose a huge senior class, and our current senior class is really solid."

Sophomore John Cook and senior Rob Alexander, the 2006-2007 SCAC swimmer of the year, both advanced to the NCAA Div. III championships last season. Alexander remains the fastest swimmer on the team, but Cook is close behind.

"John Cook is giving Rob a run for his money," Metroka said. "You can put that kid in anything, and he'll be competitive."

Sophomore Charlie Boehme leads the team in distance races, swimming the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle. Sophomore Adam Wishart has won the 3-meter dive in two meets this season and is supported by senior Jeff Tienes, freshman Patrick Springer and Metroka.

"Our team overall is looking really good," Metroka said. "We have a lot of guys putting up fast times, and it's early in the season."
