INDIANA'S OLDEST COLLEGE NEWSPAPER

'The Kick' propels DePauw to Bell victory

Issue date: 11/13/07 Section: News
There have been numerous games in the storied history of the annual fight for the Monon Bell, some of which over the years have been nicknamed and immortalized in Monon folklore: the Mud Bowl from 1967, the Snow Bowl in 1997, the Monon Miracle of 2001.

Well, get ready to add another one to that list.

Tied with just 2.4 seconds left in Saturday's 114th meeting between DePauw University and No. 9 Wabash College, sophomore kicker Jordan Havercamp hit a 47-yard field goal as time expired to give the Tigers a 24-21 victory and became a part of that long-lived folklore with what might be known from now on as "The Kick."

"I couldn't believe it," Havercamp said amidst the remaining congratulatory field-rushers at Blackstock Stadium. "I was in awe. I'm still waiting for it to hit me."

With the ball on their own 4-yard line and just 1:23 remaining in the game, DePauw ran the ball three straight times for 20 yards before using their first timeout with 31 seconds left. Senior running back Jeremiah Marks rushed for 14 yards on the next play before Wabash stopped the clock at 20 seconds with another timeout. Junior receiver Chris Gasbarra made his 14th and Monon-record 15th receptions on back-to-back completions from sophomore quarterback Spud Dick before Marks caught his seventh pass of the day to put the Tigers in position for the game-winning kick.

Havercamp, who relieved junior kicker Brendan Smith after Smith missed a 29-yarder in the first quarter, missed an extra point earlier in the game before converting his first collegiate field goal of his career, giving the Tigers the Bell for the 36th time and serving the Little Giants their first loss of the year.

"It was kind of a hunch," said head coach Matt Walker. "We decided to give him a shot. He missed the extra point but we just decided to stick with him and see what happens."

Trailing by eight with just 10:56 left in the game, Marks scored his second touchdown of the game on an eight-yard shuffle pass from Dick, capping off their longest drive of the season: 15 plays and 83 yards while eating up 7:19 of clock. On the two-point conversion attempt, Dick threw to freshman receiver Alex Koors in the flat who then made his man miss and scampered into the end-zone to tie the game at 21.
