The football team will work to keep its streak of four consecutive road wins alive this weekend as they travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on the Rhodes College Lynx.
DePauw, who has won six in a row against the Lynx, is coming off of one of its best performances in recent weeks - a 35-6 win over Colorado College at home.
The Lynx fell to Centre College last week 27-0 to snap a three-game winning streak.
Despite playoff qualifications looking slim, with an outside shot at landing a share of the SCAC title, the Tigers said they are still playing for a lot.
"It's a conference game. It's a huge game and we still have a chance to get a piece of the prize of the conference championship," said coach Matt Walker. "We want to give ourselves a chance to get an outright second place in the league or a share of the conference championship."
DePauw last won a conference championship in 2005 when the Tigers shared it with Trinity (Tx.) University.
Sophomore quarterback Spud Dick said that the implications of this game speak for themselves.
"I think the coaches have done a really good job keeping us focused," said Dick, who was named to the SCAC Team of the Week for his performance this past weekend against Colorado. "Until last weekend, Rhodes was in line if they won out to win the conference. 8-2 is a lot different than 7-3 or 6-4, so this game is definitely huge for us, especially going into Monon week and not looking ahead."
Walker said he really didn't even think about it.
"That doesn't really even enter your mind," Walker said. "We're still playing well. That's the thing that we're real proud of, fighting through a couple of tough losses that set us back in terms of the conference race."
While conference leaders Millsaps College and Trinity, both with only one loss, each have two more conference games to play, DePauw has only one. If the Tigers can win while Millsaps and Trinity lose, they would earn a share of first place.
"We talked about after that Trinity loss, that all we can do is control our own destiny and put ourselves in a position where we can earn a share of the conference title," Walker said. "If we do that, then we've done everything we could. Crazier things have happened."
