The women's soccer team will end their season Saturday when Centre College visits Boswell Field at 5 p.m.
"Our goal is to win, as in any game," said head coach John Carter. "What better way to go out this year than to win your last game."
The match is inconsequential to the standings in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), the champion of which will be decided tonight when Trinity (Tx.) University and Southwestern University face off at Trinity. A win or tie will give Trinity the championship.
The Tigers are currently 6-12 overall and 4-4 in the SCAC. For the first time since 1990, the team will fail to produce a winning record.
"It was obviously a hard season," said senior midfielder Sarah Hile. "But it was rewarding because we finally figured things out. We finally started working together and playing as a team. It was just unfortunate that we couldn't figure it out earlier."
Centre (11-5-1) had solid performances throughout 2007 but will likely miss the NCAA tournament due to conference losses to Sewanee University and Rhodes College. The team outscored regular season opponents by a combined score of 40-8 but remains tied for third place in the SCAC with Rhodes. Centre's stingy defense shutout seven different opponents in the regular season and never allowed more than two goals in a game.
Saturday's match will be the final one in the careers of three DePauw seniors: Hile, forward Emily Petrus and goalie Adrenna Jones.
"I'm going to miss the level of competition," Hile said. "I'm going to keep playing intramurals, but it's never going to be as intense."
