Sophomore Ross Williams was arrested for possession of cocaine, a class D felony, shortly before midnight Tuesday.

Public Safety officer Rick Keller confiscated a Ziploc bag of the drug from Williams' residence at 210 E. Walnut St. Keller and fellow officer David Barber had originally been dispatched to the house to locate an individual who was a possible suspect in a separate theft case, according to an incident report.

Williams was also charged with Class D felony possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance. The separate charges stemmed from the discovery of 125 grams of marijuana and multiple Hydrocodone and Xanax pills.

Associate Director of Public Safety Angie Nally said incidents involving cocaine and DePauw students are rare, but not unheard of.

"We are more likely to see marijuana, but we do see some cases of possession of cocaine," she said.

According to Public Safety's report on the incident, Barber heard a noise on the east side of the building. Upon further investigation he discovered a backpack had been thrown from a second story window.

Keller witnessed Williams approach the back door of the house through a side window and moved to the rear of the house to encounter him. As Williams stepped out he began to move toward the area where Barber had found the backpack.

Keller escorted Williams back into the house for questioning about the original investigation while Barber interrogated the theft suspect in a separate room. The report stated Williams was unable to provide Keller with information regarding the theft case, but he became visibly nervous when the officer asked about the backpack.

Barber moved to the second level of the residence and noticed the smell of marijuana, along with visible amounts of the drug on a desk in one of the bedrooms. He called Keller and Williams upstairs, and the officers noticed the room's window was open and the screen had been knocked out.

Williams declined to answer why he had disposed of the backpack, and Keller began to search through its compartments. According to the report, Williams became agitated, and Keller asked Barber to take control of him to ensure the safety of both officers.

Keller discovered the cocaine, marijuana and pills in a shoe box in the backpack's main compartment.

Nally said Public Safety initially suggested Williams also be charged with a Class D felony of dealing marijuana.

"Some signs indicated potential possession with intent to distribute," she said.

The prosecutor's office decided against charging Williams with the fourth crime. He was released from Putnam County Jail Wednesday after posting $10,000 bail.

Williams did not respond to requests for comment.
