Professor Steve Timm's monologue collection, based on personal experiences, will play on stage, D3TV

This weekend, communications professor Steve Timm's play Steve Here -> X will debut on DePauw's campus. The play is unique for two reasons: It is written by a faculty member and it will be the first DePauw Theatre production broadcast on D3TV.

The play is a combination of monologues intermixed with a traditionally structured play. The main play, which is called "Of Wolves, Moose and Daughters," tells the story of a father who takes his distanced daughter on a journey into the wilderness.

Timm said the monologues, or reflections, that have been inserted into the play are based on people that he met during his own travels in the wilderness.

"[The monologues are] about going off into the wilderness to interpret the wilderness experience," he said.

Timm said the most difficult part of preparing for the play was developing the script, but there were perks to the job.

"I like working with students, and see them make discoveries, seeing them grow as actors," Timm said. "I like putting challenges out there."

To help prepare the cast for the production, Timm planned a camping trip at the Charles Deam Wilderness Area in the Hoosier National Forest southeast of Bloomington, Ind. The majority of the cast were inexperienced campers.

"I wanted them to get some sense of what a remote and undeveloped area feels and sounds like," Timm said. "Dragging the kayaks through a hundred yards of thigh-deep mud, and having four of the cast members get lost on the hike out were just bonuses to the experience."

Overall, the actors benefited from the cast trip. It allowed them to become educated about the background

of the play and understand how it came about.

"Going out into the woods, and doing the things that I did, like canoeing and hiking and kayaking, really helped invest myself into the characters behavior," said junior Chris Burton.

Junior Linda Bradford, who plays Steph or the Isle Royal Woman in the play, said she also thinks the cast bonded from the camping trip.
