Facing a must-win game Sunday against University of the South-Sewanee, the field hockey team responded by scoring twice in the first half en route to a 3-1 victory.

The Tigers needed a victory this past weekend to ensure they wouldn't have to play in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships feed-in game on Friday. After losing to Centre College 1-0 on Saturday, the team faced a Sewanee team that defeated it 3-2 in overtime earlier in the season.

"We were determined to get a win because we didn't want to play three games [at the Conference Championships]," said junior Meredith Ellis said.

That determination put DePauw ahead early as junior Beth Seegers scored on an assist from junior Carolyn Mueller at the 16:05 mark. Mueller then added an unassisted goal less than four minutes later to give the Tigers extra breathing room.

"The first goal was a huge pump up for all of us and it showed this [win] possible," Seegers said. "I personally had a huge rush after that ... and we were able to tell ourselves we can do it again and we scored once more."

The Tigers then put the game out of reach in the second half as Seegers scored a second goal off an assist from Ellis. Sewanee would score its lone goal with 1:11 remaining in the game to stop DePauw from getting its third shutout of the season.

In the rematch against Sewanee, Seegers said the Tigers were more aggressive on the offensive side of the field. Ellis agreed, saying their offensive passing was strong for most of the game.

"Offensively we were getting our shots in and our touch on the ball to get it into the goal, and we just kept fighting for it," Seegers said.

The Tigers were put into their position against Sewanee after losing a tight contest to Centre. The teams battled through a scoreless first half before Centre put in the winning goal at 39:10. It was the second time Centre defeated DePauw this season after handing them a 3-0 loss on Sept. 15.

Splitting this weekend's games gave the Tigers a 10-8 record overall and 4-4 record in the SCAC to end the regular season. This record will give them the No. 3 seed in the SCAC Conference Championships. The tournament's bracket has not yet been released, but the team's first game will be Saturday at Sewanee in Sewanee, Tenn.
