Any hopes of claiming a postseason birth were dashed during the past two weeks as the women's soccer team lost three of four games, culminating in a 4-0 defeat to the defending national champion Wheaton College on Saturday.

"You play the best teams you can to get collectively better and also to challenge the players individually," said head coach John Carter. "I was really proud and happy with how we competed."

The undefeated and No. 1-ranked Wheaton team hasn't lost a game since Sept. 23, 2006, and will carry a 35-game winning streak into the NCAA tournament. In Saturday's game, Wheaton dominated offensively, scoring twice in each half while out-shooting the Tigers 24-5.

Saturday's loss followed a 2-1 conference victory over Austin College in rainy weather on Friday. Freshman Julia Drummond scored in the 10th minute on an assist from Junior Jacki Ponder. Austin College later scored an own-goal to give DePauw the win.

"We did good things considering the weather," Carter said. "When we didn't force it we were outstanding."

The No. 5 Tigers dropped to 4-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) and 6-12 on the season. Trinity University (Tx.) is atop the conference standings while Southwestern University trails by one point heading into the season's final weekend.

"For the first time in a long time, playoffs are not an option," Carter said. "But it's been one of those years where we've been excellent between the eighteens, but we've just struggled to finish. We've been incredibly good we just haven't scored enough in the attacking third."

The Tigers finish their season Saturday when they play Centre College at Blackstock Stadium at 5 p.m. Centre is No. 4 in the SCAC standings with a 4-2-1 conference record.
