In one of the greatest plays in college football history, Trinity (Tx.) University now holds its own destiny in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) standings.
Down 24-22 to Millsaps College with two seconds remaining, Trinity lined up for the game's final play 61 yards from the end zone. Quarterback Blake Barmore then completed a pass about 15 yards over the middle of the field and madness ensued. The football was lateraled 15 times before it ended up in the hands of wide receiver Riley Curry, who ran it into the end zone. It was actually the fourth time Riley had touched the ball during the play.
"We lined up with an empty backfield and sent four receivers downfield to clear out the middle," Trinity head coach Steve Mohr said in an interview with ESPN. "[Our wide receiver] just told the players in the huddle to 'get behind me because we are going to lateral,' and as you saw it was just a fantastic finish."
The play has already been described as possibly the greatest play in college football history, even ahead of "The Play" from the Stanford-California game of 1982. This play has already earned its own nickname as the "Mississippi Miracle" and puts Trinity in position to capture another SCAC championship.
Trinity is now 4-1 in the conference and holds the tiebreaker over 5-1 Millsaps. DePauw is currently in third place with two conference losses. If the team defeats Centre College Saturday and Austin College on Nov. 10, it will win the conference.
