Confusion on campus as to whether or not the Monon Rugby game would be held at DePauw this year has been resolved. The game, traditionally held on the Friday before the Monon Bell football game, will be held at DePauw as planned.
Rugby club president Joo Won Park said the Athletic Department was concerned with hosting the game due to security reasons.
"It's really a man power issue," said Athletic Director Page Cotton. "That's a very busy weekend and that's just one more major event that has to be covered by our security folks."
The event's location alternates between Wabash and DePauw, according to who is hosting the football rivalry. Because of the lack of man power, DePauw suggested the schools change the tradition, allowing the school which is not hosting the football game to take responsibility for the rugby match.
"What we're trying to do is work it into a transition so that whoever is hosting the football game doesn't host the rugby game the same year, so that they would be opposite each other," said Associate Director of Public Safety Angela Nally.
Nally said this may be implemented in the next year or two.
Several rugby members discussed the issue with Public Safety and the athletic department, and compromises were made.
"The rugby leadership has been very cooperative," Cotton said. "They're very understanding of the concerns we have about the safety of not just the game itself, more importantly is the safety of the event."
As part of these conditions, Cotton said, the rugby team will be hiring more security, as well as recruiting student advocates to monitor the crowd.
"I've always felt that students have the best opportunity to control their fellow students as opposed to security or administrators, so I see that to be a real plus for us," Cotton said.
Nally said the team will also provide temporary lighting for the field "so that not only are the fans who had come to support them well-lit and safe, but also the game."
