We at The DePauw would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of Patrick Woehnker and to the whole of the Wabash community. At this time of crisis, our thoughts and prayers are with them - all rivalries aside. We hope that the coming weeks and months bring clarity and comfort to those in mourning.

It's an awful situation that brings about these reminders. However, the only thing to do with a situation like this is to learn from the lessons it teaches. Unfortunately the unclear circumstances of Woehnker's tragic death do remind us that everything is not always fun and games. In no way do we mean to insinuate anything about what happened Sunday, only that each of us can surely think of activities we've participated in or heard of our friends doing, that were less than careful.

While such activities are certainly part of the college experience, we're all adult enough to understand the potential danger they can hold, and we're all adult enough to make good decisions when situations arise. Along with being rival colleges, DePauw and Wabash are very similar, small colleges, and what happened there could have happened here. We're all affected when a student dies. We ask, especially in the weeks preceding Monon, for everyone to remember that there are warnings and cautionary tales because things can and do go awry. Please be careful, and please encourage your friends to do so as well.

To those mourning Patrick, we are truly sorry.
