The men's soccer team finished 2-2 on its second road trip of the season, playing four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) games in just eight days.
DePauw beat Oglethorpe University and Sewanee University the first weekend before being swept by No. 1 Trinity University and Southwestern University.
"To win four of six in conference on the road, I feel really good about that," said head coach Page Cotton after the team's final road game of the season. "Normally, if we went 3-3, I would be happy."
It was the team's first two conference losses of the season, dropping its record to 10-4-1 overall and 5-2 in the SCAC.
Last Friday, DePauw was outmatched against Trinity - the nation's top ranked team - falling by a score of 3-0.
"Any loss is disappointing, but at the same time, there were plenty of instances where we outplayed," said senior defender Nick Dascoli. "They're defensively the quickest and most aggressive team we've played this year. They play at a fast pace and we weren't able to do what we wanted to do offensively."
DePauw trailed 1-0 at the half before giving up two more goals in the second, and was outshot 39-7, the most shots on goal allowed by the team all season.
DePauw's only scoring opportunity came on a penalty kick from senior midfielder Sean Teska. The Tigers seemed unable to catch a break as Teska's attempt hit off the crossbar and bounced straight down into the hands of the goalkeeper.
The team traveled to Southwestern on Sunday where the visitors dropped a hard-fought contest 2-0. The Tigers, however, may have been feeling some lag from their previous game.
"We came into the Southwestern game a little more tired than usual due to the game against Trinity," Dascoli said. "We weren't able to create the chances that we normally would to score."
Like the game at Trinity, DePauw faced a 1-0 deficit at halftime, but was unable to stage a comeback.
"We were still in the game until they got their second goal as we were pushing forward toward the end of the game," Cotton said. "All in all, we were disappointed to go down there and not come out with at least one win."
Now with the conference title out of reach and three games left on the schedule - all on DePauw's home turf - the team hopes to refocus and make a run at a second-place finish in the SCAC.
"Losing two games back-to-back is a definite wake-up call, and we know that we need to win the remaining games in conference," Dascoli said. "Right now we're in position to finish second in conference, and if we can win out, we are in good position to get into the [national] tourney."
The team next hosts Austin College Friday and Colorado College Sunday at Boswell Field.
