Take advantage of trustees

Each year the Board of Trustees returns to DePauw for Old Gold weekend. It is one of the few times during the year when members of the University's ultimate decision-making group are around to interact with students, faculty and staff for several days. This is time spent invaluably for two reasons: It allows board members to get a feel for the actual state of the University and community, as well as enables students, faculty and staff to voice concerns and meet the men and women whose choices will ultimately affect the future of our school.
The DePauw would like to welcome all members of the Board to campus, but particularly David Hoover, as the new Chairman of the Board. The DePauw urges Hoover to use his time on campus wisely by speaking to students, faculty and staff. At the same time, we urge students to seek out board members and share their opinions - change can only be made when those in control know of the need and desire for change. To this end, the open meeting held Thursday for students to meet with the Board's Student Services Committee was an excellent event. However, it did not receive as much advertisement as it merited. Many students did not receive notification of the event's occurrence until Wednesday, making it difficult for the typically-busy DePauw student to attend. However, we at The DePauw appreciate the gesture of the Board and its new chairman. The attention that was paid to the student body's voice is something we hope will continue.
We would also like to thank and congratulate James Stewart, outgoing Chairman, who has served for the past three years. Stewart led the Board in making many decisions that have affected each class of DePauw students.
