The men's and women's cross country teams faced unusually warm weather and strong competition at the Border Wars Championships Saturday in Edwardsville, Ill. The teams ran against mostly Div. II schools in nearly 90-degree heat.

The ranked women's team finished second with 92 points, behind Missouri Southern State University which finished with 61 points. Southwest Baptist University came in third.

Finishing first for the Tigers was sophomore Lauren Reich, who came in seventh overall at 18:58.92. Freshman Laura Ardington finished 11th with a time of 19:10.86. Also contributing to the second-place finish were junior Leah Seigel, who came in 16th, and sophomore Alison Case, who finished 25th.

"We came through against all the Div. II ranked teams and we came in second to the No. 9 Div. II team," Reich said. "I was excited to see everyone do so well."

Kimi Shank of Missouri Southern University was the individual winner, completing the five kilometer course in 18:19.06.

The men's team finished eighth in the eight kilometer race with 244 points. First place Southwest Baptist University had 83 points, while Northern Kentucky University and the University of Central Missouri finished second and third, respectively.

Senior Dusty Kime was again the top finisher for the men's team, completing the course in 27:10.76 to finish 22nd overall.

"Personally, I feel everyone put forth a really good effort," Kime said. "[However], there's always room for improvement."

Sophomore Zach Weinberg finished 31st in 27:18.43 with junior Nathan Ellis and sophomore Steve Clark turning in strong performances as well for the Tigers.

The men's team will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to compete at the Pre-Regionals this weekend, where they hope to continue to show improvement.

"We just need to keep ... looking for ways to step up and peak our performance as the year comes to an end," Kime said.

The women will also travel to Grand Rapids, where they hope to improve on their Border Wars performance.

"I think we need to go out there and try to do as much damage as we can," Reich said.
