It is not very often that a team loses a conference game, yet remains unbeaten in conference play. That is, unless, the team is playing Birmingham-Southern College.

The men's soccer team fell to Birmingham-Southern 2-0 Friday night at Boswell Field. The defeat, however, will not be counted in the conference loss column because of Birmingham-Southern's recent addition to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) after a reclassification from Div. I to Div. III.

The Panthers' roster still consists of several scholarship athletes, and until they all graduate, NCAA rules state that their SCAC games cannot be counted and they are ineligible for any postseason play.

Despite the loss that snapped their four-game win streak, the Tigers remained positive about their play.

"I think we did a great job and we came out stronger than we normally have and competed really well, especially in the first-half," said senior Sean Teska.

Birmingham-Southern got on the board early in the first half on a Gino Cozzolino goal to take a 1-0 lead. The only score of the second half came from the Panthers' Norman Baer. Unfortunately, DePauw was not able to amass scoring chances and was outshot 13-3.

"They probably had better scoring chances and more possession than we did, but we created some good chances and were close to scoring a couple of times," said senior goalkeeper John Fenley. "Everyone on the team felt that we competed really well with them and played a great game. We were disappointed with the result, but not [with] how we played."

The team, however, was able to get back on track Sunday afternoon when it defeated guest Millsaps College 6-0.

Junior midfielder Adam Davis scored the winning goal for the Tigers just 59 seconds into the game. Midway through the first half, senior Scott Noel scored on an assist from Davis, and then Noel returned the favor recording the assist on Davis' second goal to make it 3-0 going into halftime.

Senior Mike Harris started the second half scoring, before freshman Martin Cheramie and Teska recorded the last two goals.

"I played a ball to Martin and started making a run on the left side, and he put the ball between two defenders into an open space and I was able to put it into the net," Teska said.

DePauw remained atop the conference standings as they improved to 3-0 in the SCAC and 8-2-1 overall. Millsaps dropped to 1-5 in conference and 3-8 overall.

"It felt good to get back on a winning streak and score some goals," Fenley said. "We use games like this to work on our game for the future, especially for conference games coming up this weekend."
