Despite dropping five straight games and falling to 2-7, the women's soccer team remains alive in the race for the conference championship. It would take an improbable run to reach the championship, but it's possible with eight conference games remaining.
This weekend, DePauw hosts two important home games. Tonight the team has a non-conference match with Birmingham-Southern University at 6 p.m., and Sunday at noon, the Tigers take on Millsaps College in a crucial conference match.
"Sunday is a must win,"said junior Katy Phillips. "We really can't lose any more games in the conference if we want to win the championship."
DePauw defeated Millsaps 4-0 last season. This year, Millsaps has an 0-2-1 record in the SCAC and hasn't won a game since Sept. 16. Tonight, the Tigers take on an 8-2 Birmingham-Southern squad fresh off of a 4-1 victory over Austin College Sept. 28. Birmingham-Southern joined the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in June 2006, but because the team's roster still contains athletes on scholarship, games against conference opponents won't count in the conference placing until those players have graduated.
In the past five games, DePauw has been outscored 12-2. The team's last victory came at Earlham College on Sept. 9 when it out-scored the Quakers 3-1.
"We have a lot of good players, but we're still figuring out where everyone should play," Phillips said. "It's an organizational issue at this point rather than skill. And that goes for all positions - defense and offense."
