Juniors Jackie Smith and Beth Seegers helped the field hockey team win a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games over the weekend.
The team improved to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the SCAC. The Tigers are on a roll, as they have won four games in a row and remained undefeated at home (4-0).
On Friday, the Tigers hosted the winless Hendrix College Warriors and were deadlocked in a scoreless tie until Smith found the back of the net with four seconds to play in the first half. The DePauw defense was perfect, allowing no shots on goal, as Hendrix fell to 0-6.
With their first conference win under their belt, the Tigers hosted Rhodes College Sunday morning. This time, Seegers provided the clutch offense with her goal in sudden-death overtime, as the Tigers won 2-1.
Seegers said she was excited about the win streak and the fact that the Tigers were able to beat one of their biggest rivals.
"When we went into overtime against Rhodes, the thought of losing didn't even cross my mind," Seegers said. "We were all set on a win. I was so thrilled that we won not only the fourth game in a row, but it was against a big rival - Rhodes."
One of the reasons for their success could be the addition of junior forward Meredith Ellis, who returned earlier than expected from a knee injury she suffered over the summer. Ellis, who was an All-Conference player last season.
"I think the most important reason that we have been winning is our passing," Ellis said. "We have really started connecting our passes, and with that we have just wanted it more than the other teams."
