In love with October

Oh October.

It may not be March, but being number two in terms of sport-fan love is just like being Jessica Alba instead of Jessica Simpson. Both are fun to look at, it just happens that Simpson's stupidity is more enjoyable to laugh at.

This same situation applies to the month of October. March has its obvious appeals with March Madness and more, but look at what October has to offer a sports fan: the MLB playoffs, NFL and college football games, the beginning of the NBA season and college basketball's Midnight Madness. This all just makes me happier than a hungry student when Marvin's arrives at 2 a.m. on Saturday.

This year I've found myself enjoying October even more than usual. With the Colts being 3-0 and returning Super Bowl champs, I have the final trump card for the ridiculous number of Bears and Cowboys fans that like to argue against the Horse. I've never heard so many Cowboys fans argue against the Colts as this year, but when they say they are better, all I have to say is, "Yeah the Cowboys won on Sunday, but did Tony Romo have too much hair gel in his hands when that football slipped right on through? Because Peyton didn't let the ball slip in the rain of that game called ... What is it again? Oh yeah, the Super Bowl." Or for Bears fans (who have been quieter than freshmen when RAs come to their floor) it's even simpler to respond, "We beat you, badly. Maybe the Bears can make it a decent game now that Rex is gone."

Then comes the pinnacle of October - the MLB playoffs and the World Series. I grew up playing baseball, so this month gives me warmth that can only be experienced when I remember the dreams I had of one day playing in the big leagues. Baseball may get a backseat next to the NFL right now, but in two weeks, eyes will be glued to the majestic grass under the lights.

Making these playoffs even more enticing is the Cubs' surge toward the playoffs. Assuming they stave off the Brewers, the Cubs will give their loyal fans hope of ending their misery. They are the last lovable losers remaining, and their fans' hope will rise like a male student's when a girl flirts with him on that Friday night. The chance to finally end the curse behind Zambrano, Soriano, Lilly, Lee and Ramirez is enough to watch the playoffs. Can this October be magical enough to allow Bartman to come out from hiding?

Well even if it isn't, March is only five months away.
