The July 1 deadline has come and gone without a new state budget being signed into law. After threats of cuts by Governor Rod Blagojevich and his recalling the General Assembly back into session, Eastern's 2.8 percent increase in state allocations may not be a reality.

Minimum wage was just increased 25 cents an hour in Illinois to $7.75.
Right now, thanks to the Fair Labor Standards Act, the base minimum wage for hourly workers in this country is $5.85. On the 24th of this month, that rate will increase to $6.55, and next year it will increase to $7.

At Chicago's gay pride parade Sunday afternoon, I saw an outlandish collection of freaks and degenerates, out and proud for something inherently shameful. I'm talking about the protestors.
Near the end of the parade's route on the corner of Pine Grove and Diversey, wooden riot-control barricades and a few disinterested-looking cops surrounded about 20 or 30 fundamentalist Christians.

Fox-Atkins Development finalized the purchase of Research Park's former Motorola building from Motorola Inc. June 23. The 74,000-square-foot structure is the only building in the park not built by Fox-Atkins or the University of Illinois.
The former Motorola building, located between Oak Street and First Street across from the University's Assembly Hall, was put on the market during the fall of 2007 and about 215 workers lost their jobs.

Eastern can be an ordinary college to some students. However, for Brazilian tennis standout Juliana Frey, it is a place of opportunity. Frey decided to enroll at Eastern because her home country doesn't offer collegiate tennis. Frey, 17, is in the International Tennis Federation Girl's Under 18 division and has been involved in the competitive circuit for the last five years.
