When Robert Eisele screened The Great Debaters in Compton, a violent inner suburb of Los Angeles, former gang members, aged into their 70s and 80s, came to be a part of the community and to apologize to those they might have wronged in their youth. "It was very touching," Eisele said.

After more than 120 years of publication, The Mirage's 2008 volume will be its last, joining other college yearbooks like Purdue University's The Debris, which will also be producing its final edition this year.

I'm not a DePauw person. I paraphrase a friend from high school, so let me backtrack a moment and explain. My friend, let's call her Ann, used to complain all the time that she just wasn't a "high school person." Ann was very smart, but disliked high school parties, disliked cliques and had absolutely no patience for the inanities and pettiness that breed in high school.

I haven't always spoken up, even when I wanted to. I always felt I wasn't qualified to speak my mind on certain subjects.

There are only two questions to answer in this space at this time. First, what has defined DePauw University this semester? Secondly, how well has The DePauw reported, synthesized and analyzed these events, feelings and activities? A new president: The paper did a solid job with fair coverage of both candidates for the position, and stories have focused on Brian Casey's plans for the University, as well as the accomplishments and contributions of President Robert G.

We've seen a last-second Monon win, the loss of a favorite Mexican restaurant, three tragic deaths of members of the DePauw community and the announcement of our next president.
